This is my most detailed & colourful leather work to date:
the iPad case has the cover art from Slash’s latest solo album “Apocalyptic Love (Amazon)” on the front. Completely hand cut, stamped, carved & painted, this cover took many days to finish (not for sale).
Check out the gallery for some photos of the work in progress and the finished case:
This is the first step: I carved the outlines into the leather
Making the image stand out by bevelling the outlines
This is a detailed view of the cuts. The scalpel shows you the scale of the photo.
I added the SLASH title but not the banner underneath. The smaller font would be too detailed to properly reproduce on leather.
I painted the leather using acrylic paints.
The front cover is hand carved and painted using acrylic paint.
The back cover shows my maker stamp.
The inside view with iPad 2 in place.
Complete view of front cover
The top view of the cover
the iPad is held in place by 2 leather corners and this leather piece at the top. This design does not rely on any rubber bands or parts that might fail after extensive use.
The corners are hand cut and designed to hold an iPad 2 or 3rd generation iPad. The lining has a snake skin texture (but is not snake skin!)

Bottom part of the carving: detail view
The front cover details. Every detail is added by hand. Even the strings are hand cut into the leather.
Angel and Devil carvings painted with acrylic paint

Detail view of the snake at the bottom of the logo (guitar pick added so you can see the scale)

Well, are these covers for sale, or is that more a personal hobby?
Hey Steffen. This one’s not for sale. I make and sell one-offs and custom ones for people who have an idea for a personalised case. But I removed the shop link from this site because I’ll be travelling for a few months so I can’t accept any orders at the moment. It’ll be back up & running early next year.
It doesn’t stain the leather but there’s a clear coat on it. The paint still looks the way it is in the photos. Depending on the usage, it probably would start to fade or rub off lightly within a decade or so. That’s a guess, I don’t really know.

Beautiful work. How do you stop the paints from flaking or rubbing off the leather? Or does it stain the leather just like the dyes do?
