Making a simple leather laptop bag (now with pattern!)
This is my first leather bag design. I have documented the process but it’s not a full tutorial, yet.
You might be able to follow along or create your own design based on this post. If you do, I would love to see what you come up with. Post it in the comments or send me a note.
The idea: a simple, hand-stitched design
The idea was to create a bag to hold a 15″ laptop, a graphics tablet, small camera, lenses and other smaller things. It had to be a simple, hand-stitched design using 6-7 oz vegetable tanned leather.
I didn’t want to add any stiffeners, lining or hardware in order to keep the design simple.
The first stage: planning and pattern making
Initial Sketch
Rough measurements and idea for the diagonal lines.
Made a pattern out of paper
The front pocket will change later. This design did not work with the thick leather I used.
The second stage: cutting & sewing
Used the pattern to cut the leather
This is the pattern on some 6-7oz leather.
Dyed the leather black
The next one will have to be naturally tan coloured.
Sewn on the small front pocket
The small pocket in the front is now a wet-moulded pocket instead of the design from the paper version. It’s very small and meant to only fit a small wallet or cables.
Sewn the sides to the front: the bag is taking shape.
At this point I’m still not sure if the bag will fit together.
The finished bag
This is the finished bag
The idea was to make a large bag without any hardware. Only thread and leather.
The back of the bag
This would be a great place for a carved design.
The front with the flap open
Some more space for carving.
Inside view
I like using bags with one large compartment instead of many small pockets for things. Makes it more flexible if you start adding sleeves, removable padding and so on.

Living in RSA, we find it extremely difficult to purchase from overseas vendors due to the absurd exchange rates. Therefore, it is with the greatest respect and humility, that I thank you for making this pattern available at zero cost. If I could have donated, I would have blessed you as you sre blessing all those around the world, such as I.

Cooolllll
Love the project, is pattern to be printed for a full size or does it need adjusted.
Thanks Ray! It’s full size but you’ll either need a large format printer or know how your printer can print out tiles of A4 or Letter sized paper.
Impressive!
